Torsher and alternatives
Torsher brings a TV catalog, playback while downloading, a local library and movie and series automation into one self-hosted app. Whether it fits your home depends on what you want to watch, keep and maintain.
This comparison covers available features, not roadmap promises. Last checked: 2026-11-01. Add-ons, plugins and client devices can change what each setup supports.
Choose by what you need
| Your priority | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Browse, watch, keep files and follow new episodes in one app | Torsher | One container for playback, downloads, library and automation; your indexer stays separate |
| Serve a collection you already own | Jellyfin | A dedicated media server with a choice of clients |
| Browse and watch through add-ons | Stremio | A viewing app built around an add-on ecosystem |
| Configure each part of your media setup separately | A multi-app stack | Separate tools for requests, automation, downloads and playback |
| Keep using a familiar TV interface with a torrent streaming server | Lampa + TorrServer | Independently configured viewing and streaming components |
Torsher
Choose Torsher if you want to manage the path from finding a title to watching and keeping it in one place:
- Browse the catalog on the TV and start playback while a torrent downloads.
- Keep selected files in your library, or let the viewing cache clean itself up.
- Connect existing media folders read-only.
- Follow movies and new episodes, with quality and audio preferences, for automatic downloads or notifications.
You run the server and provide storage. For release search, connect any Torznab indexer, for example Prowlarr or Jackett. Torsher includes no content or sources, and you are responsible for the sources you connect.
Check supported devices before switching. The LG app is tested on an LG C4; the Android TV app is tested in an emulator, not on physical devices yet. Support for existing Jellyfin client apps is planned, not available yet. Torsher is not a drop-in replacement for every feature of the apps below.
Jellyfin
Jellyfin serves your own media collection, including movies, shows, music and photos. Its server and clients are a good starting point when you already have files and mainly need to organize and play them.
Torsher's focus is movies, series and home videos, with release search, torrent playback and follow automation in the same app. If Jellyfin already covers your needs, or you rely on a particular Jellyfin client, there is no need to replace it just to try Torsher.
You can use both: let Jellyfin read the files Torsher keeps, or connect your existing folders to Torsher read-only. This shares files, not watch history or accounts. See Storage and library.
Stremio
Stremio is a viewing app with an add-on ecosystem. It offers apps across several platforms and account-based synchronization between devices. The sources and playback options you get depend on the add-ons and platform you use.
Stremio also supports local video playback. The distinction is how you want to manage your media: Torsher runs a server that handles downloads, a persistent library and new-episode automation for your household, without a Torsher cloud account.
Choose Stremio if its apps and add-ons already suit your viewing habits. Choose Torsher if you want the server to manage what you keep and what downloads next. Torsher does not currently run Stremio add-ons; its release search uses Torznab indexers.
A multi-app stack
A setup with Jellyfin, Sonarr, Radarr, qBittorrent and Seerr divides the work between dedicated applications:
| Job | Separate app | In Torsher |
|---|---|---|
| Browse and play your library | Jellyfin | TV showcase and player |
| Monitor series and movies | Sonarr and Radarr | Follow |
| Download torrents | qBittorrent | Built-in torrent engine and download controls |
| Discover and request titles | Seerr | Browse, download and follow from the showcase |
These are overlapping jobs, not feature-for-feature equivalents. For example, Seerr has request approvals, while Torsher lets any profile follow titles directly from the showcase. Radarr offers custom formats for detailed release selection; Torsher exposes its own quality, language and voice-over rules. Following a series in Torsher takes new episodes; older episodes can be downloaded manually.
Keep a separate stack if you depend on those specialized controls or want to replace and configure each component independently. Torsher suits a household that prefers one app to administer. Indexers remain external in Torsher, so “one container” describes Torsher itself, not every service you might run alongside it.
Lampa and TorrServer
Lampa provides a browsing interface for TVs and other devices. TorrServer streams torrents over HTTP with a configurable cache. Its current feature list also includes Torznab search and optional transcoding builds, so streaming and source search alone are not reasons to switch.
Connecting to a local server
When Lampa is opened from a public website and TorrServer runs at a local address in your home network, browser security rules can prevent the connection even if the address is correct and the server is running. Depending on the browser and how Lampa is opened, this can involve HTTPS-to-HTTP restrictions or local network access permissions. This affects browser-based setups; it is not a limitation of every Lampa client.
If your Lampa and TorrServer setup already works well, keep it unless you need more from the same app. Torsher brings the viewing interface together with a managed library, background downloads and movie and series following. Check device support first: Lampa lists Samsung Tizen, for example, while Torsher's native Tizen app is still planned.
Try it with your existing setup
You do not need to move your collection to evaluate Torsher. Give it a separate data directory and connect existing media folders read-only. Keep your current apps while you check playback on your actual devices.
- Quick start: install Torsher.
- Storage and library: connect existing files and choose where downloads go.
- Other devices: check current clients and limitations.
